Coming Out Support Group Offered at Pride Center

Coming Out Discussion and Support Group
High profile media attention on issues such as marriage equality and the increasing presence of gay characters on prime time television lead some to forget that many gay, lesbian or bisexual people do not livey outside the confines of a strictly gay environment. Others struggle with inner guilt, shame or conflict despite being somewhatabout their orientation.

That is why the Pride Center of Western New York has teamed with local professionals to develop and lead Coming Out Discussion and Support Groups.

"We’ll help normalize the experience of being gay, lesbian or bisexual, so that people continue to move forward in their lives,” Dr. Lee Faver, the area psychologist signed on to lead the group’s development, said. “A support group provides reasons to feel hopeful about the future by providing real opportunities for social involvement with other LGBT people.”

Coming out means managing or overcoming fears that employers, family, friends or faith communities may respond negatively, Faver said.

“Living honestly andy provides many benefits,” he said. “Each person has to sort out what is most meaningful and best for himself or herself. We’re going to support those very personal choices.”

Beginning in early April, the Coming Out Discussion and Support Group will meet once a week for six weeks. Privacy and safety for participants are top priorities. The date, time and location of each meeting will be shared only with registered participants.
