ESPA Announces General Elections Endorsements
New York City, October 21, 2004 – Empire State Pride Agenda, New York’s statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, announced its endorsements for November 2 general election races across the state.
“We are proud to support candidates, regardless of party affiliation, who support equality and justice for LGBT New Yorkers,” said Alan Van Capelle, Executive Director of the Pride Agenda. “Equal rights should be an issue that unites all New Yorkers and all political parties and never one that divides us. That is the Pride Agenda’s goal. We are proud of our achievements in this area and that is what we will continue to fight for here in New York State.”
The voter guide covers sixty-seven races for the State Assembly and State Senate, one for Mayor and one for District Attorney. Because the Pride Agenda focuses on fighting for equal rights at the state and local level, it does not typically make endorsements in elections for seats in the U.S. Congress. Earlier in the summer, the Pride Agenda did endorse John Kerry for President and John Edwards for Vice President.
State and local endorsements are based on responses to a Pride Agenda candidate questionnaire, an examination of a candidate's voting record (in the case of incumbents) and his or her public acts and statements, and consultations with other organizations throughout New York State, including local LGBT organizations. The voter guide provides more information on specific issues covered in questionnaires.
Incumbents who demonstrate their strong support for issues important to the LGBT community are usually endorsed. Challengers mounting viable campaigns with a strong record of support for LGBT issues are sometimes endorsed over incumbents. Candidates not seeking the Pride Agenda’s endorsement or not otherwise participating in the endorsement process are typically not endorsed.
The Pride Agenda urges everyone to volunteer, contribute to, and vote for these deserving candidates on Tuesday, November 2, 2004. Those wishing to volunteer their time with the Pride Agenda on Election Day or on campaigns leading up to the general election should contact Chris Cormier at .
