Hoyt secures funds for the Pride Center
Assemblymember Sam Hoyt (D-Buffalo, Grand Island) was joined Monday, October 11, by members of the Pride Center of Western New York to present them with a $7,000 grant. This grant will continue to aid the work of the center, as it provides the people of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community with resources and support.
Hoyt said “I have long been a supporter of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. This grant will help maintain the great work that this organization has done and will continue to do for the community.”
James Ver Steeg, the Director of the Pride Center, said “The thoughtful support of Assemblyman Hoyt has not only helped introduce much needed programs and services to our area’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGTB) communities; it has also sent an important message to Western New York. By securing funding for the Pride Center, Mr. Hoyt and the other members of the Delegation acknowledge that our community deserves the same level of health and human services as anyone else.”
The Pride Center of Western New York, which is about to mark its one year anniversary, works with the community to ensure that Western New York is a healthy and satisfying place for gay men, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people to live, work and establish their families. Among the numerous programs offered is a Coming-Out support group, a Helping-Hands Support Group for those who have been touched by life threatening illnesses, and Rapid HIV testing, which provides monthly sessions allowing individuals the opportunity to obtain results of testing for the HIV virus within 20 minutes. The center also hosts many social events, including game nights,mike for comedy improvisation, and themed film festivals.
Hoyt said “Through the social programming, resources, and community support that this grant provides, the Pride Center will continue to thrive, and I am pleased to be able to help provide the financial support necessary to ensure the continuation of such valuable programs.”
