Ithaca Recognizes Marriages of Same-Sex Couples
ALBANY - The Empire State Pride Agenda praised Carolyn Peterson, Mayor of the City of Ithaca, for having the City fully recognize marriages of same-sex couples.
"The Mayor's decision today to honor marriages of same-sex couples makes for a stronger community where all families in Ithaca are treated equally by their government," Ross Levi, Director of Public Policy and Government Affairs for Empire State Pride Agenda, said. "There are same-sex couples right now in Ithaca who are 100% legally married and they will now have exactly the same protections Ithaca provides to all other families. We praise the Mayor's commitment to equality and justice. This is a wonderful day for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender families in Ithaca."
The City of Ithaca now joins the Village of Nyack as the second locality in New York State to honor marriages of same-sex couples performed elsewhere and to accord them the same rights as all other marriages within their local jurisdictions.
Ithaca also went an additional step and told same-sex couples wishing to apply for marriage licenses that the City would accept their applications and forward them to the New York State Department of Health for its determination rather than having Ithaca make a decision about whether or not to issue a license.
The Empire State Pride Agenda is New York's statewide civil rights organization committed to achieving full equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) New Yorkers and our families. To learn more about ESPA, visit www.PrideAgenda.org.
