Marriage Equality Town Meeting This Month
As the national controversy over marriage equality rages on across the country, many members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities are confused about their rights and options. What is the difference between marriage and civil union? How does getting married in Massachusetts relate to New York State law? What would a constitutional amendment mean?
Answers to these questions —- and so many more —- will be provided on March 21, when the Pride Center of Western New York presents a Marriage Equality Town Meeting from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Olmsted Center for the Visually Impaired (1170 Main Street, Buffalo).
The event, which isto all, will serve as a forum to educate members of the community on the issues related to marriage equality. Presenters for the panel discussion will include legislators, legal experts, faith community leaders and more.
“This event will do more than just explain the issues around civil marriage,” Pride Center director Jim Ver Steeg said. “It will put a human face on the need for full equality and protection under the law.”
The afternoon will also feature testimonials from community members on how their lives have been effected by this issue.
The Empire State Pride Agenda, co-sponsor of the event, held a similar session in Rochester on February and drew a crowd of more than 200.
