HIV Awareness
Christopher J. Keller
Mental Health Coordinator
I recently had the opportunity to attend
a training seminar on the history of men who have sex with men (MSMs)
and HIV. The content focused on the history of MSMs, the discovery of AIDS, and the challenges currently faced in our community.
As I listened to
the speakers, I was impressed with the scope of new information about
HIV and with the history of the gay culture. It made me appreciate the
many rights and freedoms we take for granted today and made me thankful
for the progress we have made over the past fifty years.
This new awareness
of the hardships and discrimination faced by previous generations made
me more acutely aware of the value of agencies like The Pride Center of
WNY and the services and resources that they provide.
The Pride Center of WNY offers a safe and
place for groups and meetings, free HIV testing, support groups,
workshops, information about community events, outreach to the
community, and advocacy. It also provides information for our health,
wellness, and safety, and referrals to professionals and health care
providers that are LGBT friendly and competent.
For those in the community that have never been
here, stop by, visit our website, or give us a call. And for anybody
who has visited us, please continue to do so and utilize the resources
we have available to our community.
